ONE SIZE FITS ALL
I made an entertaining and rewarding archive. The archive lives as somewhat hidden on this website and borrows conventions of an ecommerce clothing store. It has product categories, sizing, descriptions, and an “add to cart” feature. I chose 12 pieces to be a part of the archive, and what constituted their entry other than my love for each specific painting, was how they fit in the illusion of branded merchandise. Out of the 12 pieces within the archive, 6 of them have an individual “UNCUBED” unboxing video attached. In these videos where my brother JP presents each painting as if a brand new Nike shoe. These videos live on a YouTube channel with the fake “UNCUBED” brand. While the language is tongue in cheek and humorous, underneath there are two central beliefs I had in mind while making this archive:
1) most people don’t spend time learning about more about the artwork they enjoy (such as in an archive) and
2) I want painting to be something purchased more regularly to get the dopamine flowing like a shoes and what not.
